Wedding | An Intimate, Spring Mansion Reception & Second Ceremony

Super jealous over this one because I’m entirely convinced that this is exactly how my wedding should’ve gone- a private elopement for close family and a fun filled reception with friends- and in a venue I considered nonetheless! This shoot took place only two days before my own wedding anniversary so it was on my mind to say the least.

Cassie and Till were married in their current city of San Diego prior to me capturing their Kansas City reception, and short staged ceremony at The Simpson House. I absolutely loved all the details and laid back vibe of the festivities. They had friends perform songs, play instruments, and give speeches throughout the evening, which quickly became one of the most entertaining receptions I’ve experienced.

The thing I enjoyed the most about this wedding was that I was given the freedom to just create and capture at will. Cassie was upfront about wanting candid shots over posed images, and enjoyed my photo journalistic approach to events. With this post I choose to include more candid images, rather than those of the ceremony. This wedding was very much about the gathering and experience, over that of traditional wedding day happenings; it was about family, entertainment, and love. Of course, I had to steal Cassie and Till away to get a few shots of them alone in front of the gorgeous venue regardless.

Wedding | A Romantic, Chapel Wedding and Emotional First Look

Krista and Aras are one of those couples I’m sad to see their wedding pass by. I’d been working with them since October of 2017, and they were one of the first large weddings I booked after launching my website. Their wedding was every bit worth the year and a half long wait.

Held at the historic and unique Deleon Chapel, this wedding was as elegant as it could be. With custom engraved champagne flutes, a gorgeous muted pink and white color pallet, and the most emotional first look I’ve yet to witness. This entire group also totally killed it on the dance floor. Just look at those moves!

Wedding | An Architectural & Artistic Elopement for KC Creatives

This keeps sitting in my queue because I can’t seem to find the words to best describe Cydney and Daniel’s courthouse elopement. Their elopement took place at Jackson County Courthouse on a Monday afternoon on their seven year anniversary. (I think?) They surrounded themselves with close friends, family, former professors, and a really awesome crepe cake. All I can say is that it was utterly, authentically “them “ which feels fairly contrived to put it as such.

I’ve only been friends with these two for a short time, but have know of Cydney for a several years. I’m not really sure when our paths first crossed, but we attended the same college and the same business seminar post grad. I photographed their sweet cat family back in December and have collaborated with Cydney (who is a kick ass porcelain artist) several times since. I still don’t know Daniel very well, but I’m sure he’s as kind and creative as his counterpart. They seem to be the type of couple that I could easily just grab a drink with. Super laid back and fun to talk to. Michael and I were even invited to their pre-wedding party. Unfortunately, Michael has a distinct fear of Funkytown so that didn’t quite work out.

All aside, I was so happy they allowed me to be a part of their day! Since courthouse weddings are no longer a thing in Jackson County I never thought I’d be able to shoot inside. You have to have an “in” to get married in the building. Cydney’s father being a lawyer allowed them to find a judge, and in turn, all the gorgeous marble was mine to capture. Muahaha! Seriously, they couldn’t have picked more beautiful locations. First the ceremony inside the courthouse and a short reception followed at a near perfectly lit art gallery. This was dream elopement status for me; these are my people.

Wedding | An Urban, Rainy Day Wedding in the KC Westbottoms

I really enjoyed Matthew and Joey’s West-bottoms wedding day! I had only shot in the area once prior and didn’t venture too far from that venue. These two, however, were one of those rare couples that actually used a spreadsheet to compare tons of local photographers - giving them ratings based on certain aspects. (Oh to see those spreadsheets…. ) Regardless, I was lucky enough to make it to the top, and was excited that photography was such a priority!

Rain or shine, I was determined to force these two out to get those super symmetrical, architectural, wide shots for which I’m known. Unfortunately, the former occurred, so I doubt it was the most pleasant pre-ceremony photo shoot they could’ve experienced, but they grabbed some umbrellas and set out anyway. Those images are easily some of my favorite wedding day portraits to date. The rain cast low hanging fog over the area, diffusing the sunlight and creating a beautiful grey-blue ambiance. The graffiti covered walls and paint chipped buildings provided surprising pops of colors to an overall dreary day. I even forced the entire bridal party out into the street for a few quick shots between rain showers, while my second shooter and I exchanged turns watching the traffic.

The ceremony was also beautifully lit. I’ve always loved candlelight and apparently so did they. They choose to have a reverse unity candle lighting, which causes everyone present to have a lit candle; the last two to have their candles lit are the couple and each person’s is lit by the opposite person’s parents. It’s the only unity ceremony I’ve witnessed that you could really feel. I don’t mean that in the literal sense, being that it could actually burn you. (Which it totally could and if you don’t like fire I definitely don’t recommend it.) I loved how it caused the room to slowly illuminate as more and more candles were set aglow.

The rest of the wedding day went on as usual until mid-first dance when my primary camera body stopped working for seemingly no reason. Luckily, I had a kick ass second shooter to take temporary charge while I grabbed my second body. (This is why you hire professionals people! For anyone interested: I fixed the camera two days later. It was an electrical issue concerning the battery grip I was using. I’ve had no issues with it since.) Overall this effected nothing aside from my fried nerves. I quickly got back into shooting because o.m.g. these guys could party. It was probably one of the most consistently lively dance parties I’ve witnessed at a wedding! The grand exit was a massive sparkler send off, and we all watched as the newly weds drove off into the night.
