Inspiration | Boho Vibes and 70s Nostalgia

I’d been dreaming of this shoot for over a year. Right after I shot my first styled shoot at Jansen Place I started a mood board for this shoot. Inspired by my mother, I wanted to create a wedding that embraced her style, personality, and era of her youth. So naturally a whimsical, boho 1970s themed elopement was my choice. A year later, its finally finished and I couldn’t be more pleased.

It was an odd process bringing this shoot to life. I knew I wanted a Donna’s Dress Shop gown for starters. I found my own vintage reception dress there as a bride and loved the nostalgic, romantic feel of their wedding collection. I met Thor a few months later and knew immediately he would be the perfect groom for this shoot. For a long time I walked around with only those two details in my head. One particular problem was location. I couldn’t picture it. I knew what is wasn’t, but not exactly what it was. The day I walked into John’s Greenhouse I knew I’d found my venue. Still I stalled on beginning the process. It wasn’t until Katelynn Treolo approached me about collaborating a few weeks later that I started coordinating this shoot for real.

After settling on the greenhouse, everything else fell quickly into place. Erin was an obvious choice for the bride, although having never modeled before, her look and easy going attitude were absolutely perfect for what I had envisioned. Luckily for me, she agreed to take part! Professional creatives & friends I’d known for years stepped forward to provide jewelry, stationary, and hair design. I found the perfect macrame backdrop after checking with damn near every rental company in town. It barely fit in the space, but complimented the shoot so well. Lastly, I managed to get my favorite local cake baker and florist to take part. About a week before the shoot I realized I hadn’t contacted anyone about providing dinnerware. I thought on it and grabbed my grandparent’s blue floral china for a crowning personal touch; a set of dishes I knew my mother cherished as well.

I didn’t give a whole lot of direction design wise. I had a vague mood board filled with random images that conveyed more of a feeling, rather something specific. I choose my vendors based on their style and consistency in their field. I trusted them, and they trusted me. The over collaboration, and comradery of the group the day of the shoot was beautiful. (Seriously though. Hire these people! ) I cannot thank them enough for their time and talent.
