Couples | Modern Industrial Meets 19th Century Architecture for this Urban Engagement

When I first met with Shelby I could tell we had very similar struggles finding the right vendors to hire for our wedding days. She and Dylan looked at tons of photographers but none were quite the right fit. I’m glad they found me because they are the exact type of couple I aim to represent.

There’s this overarching vision of weddings that the world tries to sell you; one of romance and white dresses. What about the rest of us? The long term partners, the parents, the rebels, the anti-brides, the enthusiastically non-traditional, and everyone else in between? These two didn’t seem to buy into the bs which super resonated with me. Long term partners and parents, these two spoke about their wedding in less serious terms. Obviously planning a beautiful day is a top priority, but they seemed to have a realistic vision and good senses of humor - two things anyone planning a wedding needs.

For their engagement shoot we decided on downtown Kansas City. They had originally wanted to get married downtown but opted for a more ideal space outside of the city, so it seemed only natural to shoot here first. I wanted to find spaces downtown that brought modern industry forward in an area predominately designed in the late 19th century. Spaces where glass stairwells and parking garages are interspersed between ornate 19th century doorways, fountains, and storefronts. Much like their approach to their own wedding, these spaces show the progress and adaptations made to old methods and traditions, yet still embrace their beauty and importance. It was one of my favorite engagement shoots of the summer.
