Couples | A Vintage Inspired Engagement in Tulsa's Deco District
A lot of people don’t realize I shoot in Tulsa so frequently because my family lives there. Personally, I only lived in the city for four years, and I relocated to Kansas City nearly a decade ago. I travel to Tulsa so often it has become a second home, and I adore shooting amongst its modest beauty that is relatively unique to most midwestern cities.
When I met Savanah & Coleman, I happened upon Savanah’s wedding photography inquiry in a Tulsa wedding group online. The comment’s section was already filled with names of photographers, but I threw my name into the ring, quick to explain my background with the area. Lo and behold she reached out, and I knew immediately they would be a perfect fit for my oddly specific editorial, spooky, nostalgic style. The inspiration images they pulled were timeless black and white shots, both old and new. There was an air of old world formality to the images, and they seemed to have a vintage feel without any camp; almost European to a certain degree. I GOT IT. Like REALLY got it, and immediately rattled off about 10 different locations that would work for this type of session. We managed to narrow it down to three.
Strangely enough, Savanah and Coleman and not from Tulsa either, but are temporarily relocated while Coleman attends law school. It was so much fun getting to show off the midcentury and art deco structures to a couple I knew would appreciate them, but had yet to experience them for themselves. I absolutely cannot get over their session. It is easily one of my favorite engagement sessions to date, and is such a beautiful example of the timelessness I aim to capture in my work; not quite vintage, not quite contemporary.
