Inspiration | Unreal Unearth: A Hozier Inspired Editorial

Conceptualized by the incredibly creative Brooklynn of Sugar + Sky, this editorial inspired by the Hozier album, Unreal Unearth ended up becoming one of the most unique concepts I captured this year! I’m not super familiar with Hozier but listened to the album multiple times prior to the shoot. (So much so that he became a top artist of mine in my 2024 Spotify Wrapped.) I made the decision not to read the concept behind the album until after we had already shot. Upon reflection, I think we did a really good job of creating the dark and earthy otherworld Hozier explores.

We collaborated with the ever talented Dana Ashley Events and Thorne Floral to bring this brain child to life. Forest inspired floral design dominated the shoot, which incorporated locally grown mushrooms and sandstone rocks my mother collected along the shore of Lake Ouachita. We also got to work with Monty, a very chill python that I instantly fell in love with. As well as a pet fox, who was not nearly as chill.

Overall, I am incredibly proud of the visuals we created. I’m particularly in love with the reclined shots I captured through a picture frame. A few days prior to the shoot I inquired if anyone had a large frame, as I was interested the idea of emergence explored in the album, and wanted to see how that would translate visually by use of a frame. Thorne floral came though with a gorgeous antique frame adorned with dried hydrangea, and the rest is history.
